President's statement on the death of Jiri Havel
His death hit me very hard. It is a very painful loss for the Czech left. Jiří was a well-educated,
honest and decent man. For many years he was a leading figure of our party and
author of several policy documents and economic manifestos. I want to express my sincere
condolences to his family and loved ones. He will be greatly missed by all of us.
Bohuslav Sobotka, President of the Czech Social Democratic Party
- ČSSD rejects the church restitution enforced by the TOP09 and ODS as unfair, over-priced and carrying a high-risk for the state
ČSSD rejects the church restitution enforced by the right-wing government because they are unfair, over-priced and carrying a high risk for the state. If ČSSD gains in the October elections a sufficient mandate from the voters, it will use its best efforts to rectify this injustice. We will seek to significantly reduce financial compensation for unissued church property so that the compensation will be reasonable and fair. We will not allow handing over of the property owned by the Church before 25th February 1948. We will consider the possible introduction of tax assignations to be used for church financing in the future.
- ČSSD compiled its lists of candidates according to the rules
ČSSD welcomes the decision of the District Court for Prague 1, which rejected the proposal of several members of ČSSD from Moravian-Silesian Region to issue a preliminary measure to prevent the submission of lists of (ČSSD) candidates for Parliamentary elections in this county.
- ČSSD Election Program in a Nutshell
After 7 years of the reign of the right we live in a state that does not work, or does not protect its citizens. ČSSD wants to change that!
- If Karel Schwarzenberg actually wanted to defend the legality of the Republic he should support the proposal of ČSSD to dissolve the Chamber of Deputies and new elections!
I consider statements of Karel Schwarzenberg addressing the President of the Republic Miloš Zeman in the Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung exaggerated and described historical parallels of the Nazi era and communism as inappropriate. TOP 09 Chairman should not conduct the political struggle in a way that worsens the reputation of the Czech Republic abroad.
- Instead of caretaker government it seems as a government of SPOZ
It is questionable, whether Prime Minister Rusnok fully understood the President´s task. The president repeatedly spoke about government of experts. According to previous statements by Jiří Rusnok in regard to staffing composition of his government it seems, he rather assembles a cabinet of SPOZ- Zeman´s Citizens´ Rights Party. If there is a government that has no democratic mandate from the voters, it will only worsen its public perception. ČSSD understands that President Zeman named Rusnok to avoid the failed right-wing coalition and we respect this decision of the President. The new government won´t be viable and can only serve as a catalyst in a new election effort.
